Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about KotSafe, privacy, editions and the upcoming corporate edition.

What is KotSafe?

KotSafe is a free, open-source Android security suite. It combines a no-root per-app firewall, a DNS sinkhole, an offline AI assistant, an encrypted P2P mesh, SOCKS5 proxy chaining, packet inspection and an antivirus scanner in one app.

Does KotSafe need root?

No. KotSafe uses Android's built-in VPN service to filter traffic locally on your device, so no root access is required.

Does KotSafe collect or sell my data?

No. KotSafe has no accounts, no analytics and no telemetry. Traffic analysis and the AI models run on your phone. Cloud AI is used only if you add your own API key.

Is KotSafe free and open source?

Yes. KotSafe is released under the GPL-3.0 license and the full source code is available on GitHub.

How does the offline AI assistant work?

You download a small local model (such as Qwen 2.5 0.5B, SmolLM 135M or Gemma 2B) inside the app. It explains connections and threats on-device, with no internet needed.

What is the difference between Standard and Full-Power?

Standard covers the core protection with minimal permissions. Full-Power adds an APK inspector, phishing guards for browsers and SMS, anti-screenshot protection, work profile isolation and a deep storage threat scanner.

Why isn't KotSafe on Google Play?

Signed APKs are distributed through GitHub Releases so anyone can verify and audit exactly what they install.

Can I use KotSafe with another VPN?

KotSafe uses Android's VPN service, and Android allows one active VPN at a time. To use another network path, chain KotSafe through SOCKS5 (for example Shadowsocks or v2rayNG).

Which Android versions are supported?

Android 7.0 (API 24) and newer.

What is KotSafe Business?

KotSafe Business is the upcoming corporate edition of the APK, designed for teams that need central policies, visibility and managed deployment. It is coming soon. Join the waitlist on the KotSafe Business page.

How do I report a security vulnerability?

Email [email protected] or open a private security advisory on GitHub. See the Security page for the disclosure process.

Ready to take control of your Android traffic?

Free, open source and private by design.
